Learn About Fabrication

Fabrication is the process of making jewelry from metal sheet and wire. Both silver and gold are available in a variety of sheet and wire thicknesses. Wire is also available in a number of forms including round, square, half round and rectangle. We have included pictures and descriptions of steps used to fabricate an Amulet design to give you an overview of this process.

Step 1

The "frame" of the amulet is shaped from square sterling wire and the seam is soldered.

Step 2

The surface of a piece of silver sheet is texturized, using various hand and motorized tools then the wire frame is then soldered to it.

Step 3

Then the excess sheet is cut from around the frame with a hand saw and the edge is then hand filed and smoothed with a motorized tool.

Step 4

The design elements for the amulet are made. Each piece must be shaped from a piece of sterling wire and the ends smoothed and finished.

Step 5

The elements are affixed to the face of the amulet by soldering.

Step 6

The surfaces of the entire piece are inspected for scratches and imperfections. Finishing is accomplished with hand files and motorized tools. The piece then goes through a 3 step mass-finishing tumbling process before it is ready to be integrated into a finished jewelry creation.
